    Appearances of the Birthday Paradox in High Performance Computing

    We give an elementary statistical analysis of two High Performance Computing issues, processor cache mapping and network port mapping. In both cases we find that, as in the birthday paradox, random assignment leads to more frequent coincidences than one expects a priori.     Integrated urban water management in Texas: a review to inform a one water approach for the future

    Texas has considerable experience grappling with historic droughts as well as flooding associated with tropical storms and hurricanes, yet the State’s water management challenges are projected to increase. Urban densification, increased frequency and severity of droughts and floods, aging infrastructure, and a management system that is not reflective of the true cost of water all influence water risk. Integrated urban water management strategies, like ‘One Water’, represent an emerging management paradigm that emphasizes the interconnectedness of water throughout the water cycle and capitalizes on opportunities that arise from this holistic viewpoint. Here, we review water management practices in five Texas cities and examine how the One Water approach could represent a viable framework to maintain a reliable, sustainable, and affordable water supply for the future. We also examine financial and business models that establish a foundational pathway towards the ‘utility of the future’ and the One Water paradigm more broadly

    This was a 'group area' for 'Coloured' people at the time of writing, a spatially defined residential neighbourhood, with a shortage of residential accomodation and substantial social problems. This study is motivated by the need for St Philomena's a children's home to have a comprehensive study of the surrounding community, with the purpose of providing the children in the home with social access to normal community life, and of serving as a focus of meaningful social and spiritual life for the surrounding and broader community. The reports generated are intended as documents for use by the community itself in its own ongoing attempts to deal with problems and difficulties.It will hopefully form the basis for a community programme to be evolved within a community context, with the research-based information and suggestions merely servicing the community endeavour.Miserior (German Bishops' Fund

    Relative Influence of Social Media Socio-Technical Information Security Factors on Medical Information Breaches in selected Medical Institutions in Uganda

    This manuscript presents a study based on research conducted to assess the relative impact of social media (SM) socio-technical information security factors on medical information breaches in selected medical institutions in Uganda. The study was motivated by reported cases of medical data breaches through the use of SM. Procedurally, the study used an online survey method using Google Forms and a literature search technique. Data were solicited from 566 medical students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), and Kampala International University (KIU), accordingly. The key datasets collected included respondent’s demographic profile, SM usage characteristics, and medical information breaches. Through literature search, key SM socio-technical information security factors were identified. Afterwards, Spearman’s rank correlational analysis was performed to determine the type of relationships existing between SM socio-technical information security factors and medical information breaches. According to the percentage distribution summary of medical information breaches, the respondent’s level of agreement ranges from 39% to 43%. Spearman’s rank correlational coefficients (r-value) indicate significant levels (p ? 0.05) of correlational relationships for the key factors identified. However, 6 of the factors presented negative and stronger relationships, while 3 factors yielded weaker correlational relationships. Relatively, the results showed stronger relationships between the social dimensional factors, compared to the technical dimension. The negative relationships could imply that an increase in end-user compliance levels of SM socio-technical information security factors would minimize the occurrence of medical information breaches on SM. While the stronger relationship factors indicate the key SM usage factors associated with medical information breaches. Overall, the study outcome would provide empirical basis for medical institutions, SM researchers, and practitioners to rationalize and leverage SM usage in operations

    Electrostatic Steering of Thermal Emission with Active Metasurface Control of Delocalized Modes

    We theoretically describe and experimentally demonstrate a graphene-integrated metasurface structure that enables electrically-tunable directional control of thermal emission. This device consists of a dielectric slab that acts as a Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonator supporting long-range delocalized modes bounded on one side by an electrostatically tunable metal-graphene metasurface. By varying the Fermi level of the graphene, the accumulated phase of the F-P mode is shifted, which changes the direction of absorption and emission at a fixed frequency. We directly measure the frequency- and angle-dependent emissivity of the thermal emission from a fabricated device heated to 250∘^{\circ}. Our results show that electrostatic control allows the thermal emission at 6.61 μ\mum to be continuously steered over 16∘^{\circ}, with a peak emissivity maintained above 0.9. We analyze the dynamic behavior of the thermal emission steerer theoretically using a Fano interference model, and use the model to design optimized thermal steerer structures.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
